Better out than in
Off we went to see the vet who explained that Prudence had an ectopic ureter which in plain english means that one of the tubes from her kidney was bypassing her bladder, hence the constant drip. After a lot of x-rays, it was discovered that Pru’s kidney was being damaged as a result of this plumbing disaster and would have to come out.
This was quite bad news and very unexpected. Incontinence came to my last dog when she was about 11 years old. Incontinence came with Prudence... Pru was insured when she arrived, but because she was born with this problem, she was not covered. So, along with the worry about the health of our pup, we also had to worry about how to cover the unexpected vets bill. The final bill came to about £2,000 - we are now living off slops and wild berries...
Anyway, at six months, Pru went off to Lancaster Vetinary Centre to have her kidney out. What a marvellous job they did too - As you can see in the picture below, she had to be cut quite a way down so that they could take out both the kidney and as much of the offending ureter as possible. Prudence came home looking a bit like a pyjama case but blissfully unaware that she had just had a vital organ removed. Whilst we spent the next ten days resting, Prudence razzed about the place, her superglued stomach holding at all times.
